Well, you are sick and tired of your boss and you have decided that you want to start to earn a living on the Internet. Well, not so fast. Earning an online income is not as easy as the “gurus” make it sound. There are a number of things that you’re going to have to do before you even think about making your first buck online. This article will hopefully guide you down a path that will take you to where you ultimately want to end up, making a solid income on the Internet.
The first thing you want to do is sit down with a pen and paper (yes, get away from the darn computer) and write down your hobbies and interests. Why? Look, if you’re going to be doing this heaven knows how many hours a day, then you’re going to at least want to do something that you enjoy. Otherwise, you will be miserable every minute of your time online, especially when you are not making money.
The next thing you want to do is go through your list and see if any of the things you enjoy are marketable. Believe it or not, if your only interest is underwater pole-vaulting, you’re probably not going to make much of an income.
The way you find out if your hobby or interest is marketable is to go to a keyword search tool. There are many of free ones on the Internet. The one I use is here.

What you want to do is type in your keyword or words and see how many searches come up. For example, let’s say you’re interested in Auto Racing, or more specifically, Nascar Racing. If you enter this in the keyword tool, you’ll find out how many people are doing searches on Nascar. If you find that the number is significant, at least a few hundred daily, then the next thing you want to do is go to a search engine and see how many competing sites there are for that keyword. If you find there aren’t too many, then this is a niche that you might want to consider getting into. It may take a while before you find something that people are interested in that doesn’t have a lot of competition.
After you have decided on what niche you want to get into, the next step is to start thinking of how you want to satisfy a need in that niche. For example, let’s say you know all about Nascar history, including all past winners and their bios. You might want to put together an ebook on the subject and sell it online. Or maybe you have a lot of Nascar products that you can sell. You might consider selling them on Ebay. There are a number of things you can do in each niche. They key is finding something that people want. Once you’ve done that, the rest comes down to marketing.
Naturally, you’re also going to have to legally set up a business, based on the laws of where you live. For example, in the United States, you’ll need to get either a social security number or an employer identification number. You may have to register your business with the local town agency.
Starting an online business isn’t as simple as people would like to think. We can’t possibly cover all the things you’ll need in one article, but hopefully, this little bit will give you an idea if this is something that you even want to get into.
