If you are someone who keeps abreast of the latest search engine news, you may have heard that Wikipedia, the giant online encyclopedia that encourages submissions on just about any subject under the sun, is planning to launch its own search engine. This begs the question - does the world really need one more search engine? Is this latest search engine news even noteworthy? Along with these queries, there is also the matter of how Wikipedia will structure the search engine so it stands out from the competition.
According to the latest search engine news, Wikipedia’s search engine is supposed to be geared up so that it will provide strong competition with two of the single most popular search engines out there, Yahoo and Google. Whether it plans on going for the content loaded portal style of Yahoo’s front page or for the simplicity and fast loading of Google’s search page remains to be seen.
One thing that does seem to be a little different from the big boys is the way that the searches will be conducted. The idea behind Wikipedia’s approach is to create a marriage between the open source methods that are structured with algorithm processes that are used by most search engines and the simple fact of good hold fashioned human tweaking. Unfortunately, just exactly how this marriage will come about, and how successful it will be, have yet to be determined.
Wikipedia has enjoyed a lot of success with its online encyclopedia, a great share of it due to the genius of allowing persons to register and then contribute content. While there have been some instances where incorrect information has been posted, Wikipedia has increasingly become proficient in moving to delete and correct any sections that contain information that is outdated, incorrect, or incomplete. No doubt some of the tools Wikipedia has created to stay on top of the encyclopedia will also come into play when it comes to the contribution of the human element in the workings of the search engine.
At present, according to the latest search engine news, the idea is to launch the new search engine sometime over the next two years. Reports indicate that Wikipedia has backing from several prominent players in the Internet world. Ideas for ongoing revenue generation by the search engine are in the works, even as the basic operational issues associated with this newer hybrid approach are being worked out. Persons who have an interest in the latest search engine news may want to stay on top of Wikipedia’s progress. In the event that the project does indeed lead to a launch, it will be interesting to see how well it works, and if it really can become a major player, or even carve out a small niche among the less prominent Internet search engines.
