Breaking Search Engine News: Google’s GBuy Will Prove to Be Paypal’s Greatest Challenge

Like most gigantic corporations, Google has its staunch critics. French President Chirac doesn’t even want Google search engines in his territorial border. Additionally, some countries like China have limited Google’s ability to provide search engine results to clients. Others are still appalled by Google Earth, which allows anyone to view government buildings in many countries aerially.

Google’s success has been almost shocking. The company original started out by raising funds via telemarketing and provided potential investors with nothing more than a business plan. Those who felt the business plan was solid and a safe investment ended up being rewarded with a staggering return on their investment. Since then, it seems as if we hear some new piece of SE news about Google each week.

Google quickly deposed of Yahoo and Infoseek (remember Infoseek?), and MSN and established itself as the premier search engine – and as having superior results when compared to any other engine. Everyday, search engine news reports chronicle a new inroad Google has launched in the ever increasing expansion of their business.

This time, Google has decided to launch Gbuy, a payment processing system similar to Paypal. And, oh boy, Ebay – of which, Paypal is a subsidiary — must be quaking in its boots at the thought of this latest search engine news.

As king of the online payment hill, Paypal seemed to enjoy totally alienating its customers by instituting a series of lopsided rules that essentially gave Paypal full dominion over its customers. For example, Paypal can seize (refuse to release) funds if they suspect fraud on the part of the customer. The key word here is ‘suspect.’ Proof is not even required. Paypal can simply adopt a “What we say goes” attitude and there is virtually nothing anyone can do about. Well, that attitude looks like it will be Paypal’s eventual downfall. Not many tears will be shed as Paypal has totally brought their eventually slamming by Google upon themselves.

So, the bad will Paypal has built with customers seems to have brought an eventual day of reckoning upon Paypal in the form of Google’s forthcoming Gbuy, which will exist as the first major competitor to Paypal’s dominion of the market.

But, this day of reckoning will be delayed for the foreseeable future as Google has not finalized a beta version of Gbuy and the project is in limbo. Instead, Google is going forward with a different project, Google Checkout, which may prove to be a big hit as well. So, until that time, Search Engine news services have not reported much on Gbuy’s progress. Maybe by the time the SE news services do issue a report, Paypal will have cleaned up its act and they won’t get hammered as bad as expected.
