Latest SE News: Social Media Marketing

The nature of the internet and of search engines specifically is that everything is constantly growing and changing as new technology is developed and new tactic regarding searching, linking and advertising are devised. One of the newer technologies which is being fine tuned is the use of Social Media Marketing, or SMM, in order to advertise websites. The use of Social Media Marketing allows websites to gain popularity, which in turn improves their page rank in popular search engine listings like Google.

Social Media Marketing, or SSM, involves marketing for online media, including pod casts, videos and blogs through the use of social interaction in several different popular online communities including Bit Torrent which is a file sharing community, You Tube or Revver which are video sharing communities, Digg which is a news and content voting community, and Technorati or Stumble Upon which are site and blog voting communities.

Digg — Digg is by far the most popular of all social book marking communities, or social networking communities on the internet. Digg is focused mainly on news related stories and utilizes a voting-based ranking system which promotes more popular news stories and webpages to the front page. Websites can receive Digg votes once the article has been submitted to the voting system, and if a site receives enough “digg” votes, it can experience a dramatic traffic increase in just a small amount of time. Because Digg utilizes a user-based voting system, only the news stories and websites which are relevant, popular or well-read will obtain the best possible ratings.

Del.icio.us — Del.icio.us is an online repository of various websites which were bookmarked by users because they were found interesting enough to save. Del.icio.us was acquired by Yahoo in the year of 2005, but was originally independently owned and operated. When a bookmark is created by a user, the first thing that they are asked to do is to create some related keywords so that bookmarks can be found properly by other users of Del.icio.us. The act of adding related keywords is often termed “folksonomy”. In the community of social book marking websites, Del.icio.us is second only to Digg.

Technorati — This is an internet search engine which was developed in order to search through blogs, and was meant to compete directly with Google, Ice Rocket and Yahoo. Technorati is indexing around 75-million Weblogs (web logs) as of April of the year 2007. In order to receive the absolute best benefit from the use of Technorati, you will need to claim your blog, allowing you to examine more statistics about the popularity of your blog according to Technorati. If you are looking to build readership for your blog, registering it with Technorati for search capability is a great way to begin the process.

StumbleUpon — Known within the social book marking community as a “Stumbler”, StumbleUpon is a plug-in for web browsers which allows users to find and rate news articles, photos, videos and webpages. When a user who is stumbling clicks the “Stumble!” button on the toolbar of their browser, the StumbleUpon plug-in chooses a new website to display, which is based on how the user rates other websites, as well as how friends of the user rated similar pages. StumbleUpon also relies upon ratings of users that have similar or same interests, which makes StumbleUpon more or less a recommendation system based on the principles of peer networking and social networking.
